Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma leads 2022 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction Commemoration, 13 Oct

Minister Dlamini Zuma to Lead the 2022 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction Commemoration

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will lead South Africa’s commemoration of the 2022 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDR).

The IDDR observed annually on 13 October to raise awareness about Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) provides an opportunity for disaster management practitioners and policymakers to acknowledge the progress that is being made towards reducing disaster risk and losses in lives, livelihoods, and health in line with the Sendai Framework.

Accordingly, since 2016, the commemoration of the IDDR has been linked to each of the seven (7) targets of the Sendai Framework. This year’s IDDR is commemorated under Target G: “Substantially increase the availability of and access to multi-hazard early warning systems and disaster risk information and assessments to the people by 2030”.

This year’s commemoration of the IDDR will, on the one hand, seek to profile work that is underway across sectors in line with the outcomes of the sub-targets/ deliverables of Target G and on the other hand, provide an opportunity for the leadership to commit to measures that must be implemented to achieve the objectives of the theme in the medium and long-term.

Thus, in order to streamline the implementation of these measures, the 2022 IDDR will culminate in the adoption of a national action plan (logical framework) to track and monitor performance of programmes and initiatives linked to the theme.

In line with the principles of the District Development Model (DDM), this year’s IDDR will be commemorated with Minister Dlamini Zuma leading the session jointly with Deputy Minister of COGTA, Ms Thembisile Nkadimeng and Mr Anton Bredell, MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning in the Western Cape as well as the Executive Mayor of the City of Cape Town, Mr Geordin Hill-Lewis.

The IDDR will also see participation and support by experts from different portfolios including government, financial institutions, business, civil society, and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and any other relevant stakeholders that will be identified by the Organising Committee including the community.
