Minister Nathi Mthethwa activates Women’s Month, 1 Aug

Arts And Culture to activate Women’s Month with a launch of books about Dr Esther Mahlangu and Mama Noria Mabasa

Minister Nathi Mthethwa to activate Women’s Month by holding a book launch towards celebrating women such as the likes of Dr Esther Mahlangu and Mama Noria Mabasa. The activation and launch is scheduled to take place on 01 August 2019 under the theme: “25 Years of Democracy – Growing South Africa Together for Women’s Emancipation”.

The Department of Arts and Culture is in the final stages of establishing the Publishing Hub, which will play a critical role in promoting a culture of writing and reading, and literary development as well as expanding the work of the Living Human Treasures Project. Even though this will be an extensive project, one aspect is to publish books on living human treasures, their knowledge is recognized, protected, preserved, and promoted.

In progressing this effort, the department will launch books about Dr Esther Mahlangu and Noria Mabasa.

Dr Esther Mahlangu is an artist who is world-famous for her bold large-scale contemporary paintings that reference her Ndebele heritage. Mabasa is a world-renowned artist who works primarily in ceramic and wood sculpture, influenced by her Tsonga heritage.

This type of content could be exactly what is needed to grow active book readers, hence the department has long recognized that a culture of reading and writing needs to be established and that the book industry needs to be sustainable and support all South African Languages.
