The Minister of Home Affairs, Naledi Pandor will tomorrow, Tuesday, 15 January 2013, at 10h00 visit the Chris Hani Informal Settlement victims in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality in Eastern Cape, whose informal dwellings were destroyed by the raging inferno on 3 January 2013.
About 570 shacks were reportedly destroyed, leaving approximately over 2 000 residents destitute. They are currently housed at Lillian Ngoyi Hall (New Brighton) and Thembelihle School (KwaZakhele).
Minister Naledi Pandor will be leading a strong team of the Department of Home Affairs officials, who will be making sure that all those affected, are issued with Identity Document (IDs), Birth Certificates and other enabling document.
Understanding that the affected residents lost almost all their belongings during this devastating fire, the Department of Home Affairs, through its Director-General, Mr Mkuseli Apleni, decided to waive all the fees, normally charged for the issuance of second IDs (R140), temporary IDs (R20) and birth certificates (R20).
Minister Pandor will also use the opportunity to visit the Home Affairs Regional Offices, 682 Govan Mbeki Str, Port Elizabeth, as part of her ongoing campaign to assess service delivery levels in all our offices.
