African women scientists and policy makers meet to discuss poverty alleviation and economic empowerment through scientific research and innovation

The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, will open the 5th Gender Summit Africa (GSA) to be held at the Cape Town ICC on Tuesday, 28 April 2015.

The GSA is part of a series of international Gender Summits held in various countries across the globe. Held for the first time in Africa, it is aimed at stimulating meaningful conversations on how science, technology, infrastructure, capital and skills could be used to realise the continent's full potential for the benefit of its entire people.

The summit will also provide a platform for leading female scientists, researchers and decision makers from Africa and Europe to address issues such as removing gender-bias from science and advancing equality in science structures and practices.

The summit will end on 30 April. It is co-hosted by the Department of Science and Technology, the Human Sciences Research Council and the Medical Research Council.
