The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, will launch the South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) Research Chair on Medical Product Development through Additive Manufacturing at the Central University of Technology, Bloemfontein, on 14 August.
SARChI is a government human capital development intervention aimed at strengthening and improving the scientific research and innovation capacity of South African public universities, enabling them to produce high-quality postgraduate students and research and innovation outputs.
The key objectives of SARChI are to attract established researchers from abroad and industry into higher education institutions as well as to retain experts already in the system. Research chairs are awarded in diverse disciplines in the natural sciences, engineering, humanities and social sciences. They respond to government priorities.
The incumbent of the chair being launched is Prof. Ihar Yadroitsau. He has over 28 years of academic experience in applied optics and laser technologies. The focus of his work is on medical product development using a layer-by-layer manufacturing process that uses laser techniques to selectively fuse together powdered material.
