The Minister of Home Affairs, Naledi Pandor will on Monday, 4 March 2013 at 12h30, as part of the department’s decision to issue only unabridged birth certificates to newborn babies, issue the first unabridged birth certificate at the Parklane Hospital in Johannesburg.
From Monday, 4 March 2013, the Department of Home Affairs will no longer issue abridged birth certificates to new born babies. Only unabridged birth certificates, which will contain more information, including the details of both parents, with added security features, will be issued to new babies.
This initiative forms part of the department’s commitment to securing the identity and citizenship of its people, improving service delivery and ultimately becoming a paperless, fully modernised, department.
Other benefits of only issuing unabridged birth certificate include:
- Immediacy – the certificates will be issued on the spot;
- Minimise turnaround time and ensure speedy, efficient and accurate service delivery; and
- Be more secure and reliable with added information.
The certificates will be issued at no cost to first time applicants.
The department reminds holders of abridged birth certificates that these will continue to remain legal documents.
