Minister Naledi Pandor to deliver the keynote address at the unveiling of the Boilmaker Centres of Specialisation programme at Ekurhuleni East TVET in Kwa Thema, Springs
The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Naledi Pandor, will deliver the keynote address at an event, organized to officially launch the Boilermaker Centre of Specialisation programme at Ekurhuleni East TVET College, Artisan and Skills Development Centre, 10 Argon St, Fulcrum, Springs in Gauteng.
The Centres of Specialisation (CoS) is a national programme aimed at building the capacity of the public TVET college system to deliver trade qualifications while building the much-needed skills for Strategic Integrated Projects (SIPs).
A total of 26 college, across the country were identified to provide training in 13 critical trades and occupations that are in short supply for various infrastructure development and the economic needs of South Africa in general.
These trades are; mechanical fitter, boilermaker, electrician, millwright, bricklayer, plumber, automotive mechanics, diesel mechanic, carpenter and joiner, welder, rigger, fitter and turner, and pipe fitter.
The programme started in January 2019 with employers appointing apprentices and sending them to colleges between February and March 2019. Four employer associations, namely, the Retail Motor Industry (RMI), Steel and Engineering Industry Federation (SEIFSA), Institute of Plumbing (IOPSA) and South African Institute of Welding (SAIW), are part of this groundbreaking initiative.
The boilermaker trade is the newest trade being offered by Ekurhuleni East TVET College in addition to plumber and electrician trades being implemented in partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
