Minister Mashatile visits the community of Naturena, Soweto

Arts and Culture Minister, Paul Mashatile, will conduct a Public Participation Programme (imbizo) with the community of Naturena, Johannesburg and surrounding areas.

This event will take place Saturday, 4 May 2013.  

The Department of Arts and Culture Minister will interact with groups and individuals from the community particularly in the creative arts, heritage, language and the library sectors. Amongst other issues, Minister Mashatile will also address matters relating to social cohesion and nation-building.

The DAC Minister will further outline the role of Mzansi Golden Economy (MGE) which is a new strategic focus of the department to contribute towards economic development and job creation. There will also be the hoisting of national flag at Freedom Park Primary School, Naturena. This is in line with the department’s “Flag in Every School” programme which aims to install a flag in every school in the country.

Naturena has emerging youth development programmes and activities within the arts, activities range from film, dance and music. Some of the country’s highly acclaimed artists residing in the area such as the legendary John Kani have expressed their wish to work with government to empower their community by nurturing the upcoming talent.

The imbizo will provide an opportunity for the community to share and discuss their concerns with the department. The community will also get the opportunity to voice their suggestions on how they would like to work with the government in order to improve service delivery. The Arts and Culture Minister will be accompanied by Gauteng Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture MEC, Mr Lebogang Maile and the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Mr. Parks Tau.
