Minister Mashatile launches Freedom Fridays

Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Paul Mashatile will give a keynote address at the launch of “Freedom Fridays”, an initiative of LeadSA. The event will take place on Friday, 20 September 2013 at Sakhumzi Restaurant in Soweto, Johannesburg.

There will be messages of support from, amongst others, Minister of Sports and Recreation, Mr Fikile Mbalula, Social Cohesion Advocates namely Judge Yvonne Mokgoro and Mr Ahmed Kathrada, the youth and various partners.

Freedom Fridays is a call to all South Africans to take pride in their nation and celebrate the road they have travelled since 1994. This will be symbolised every Friday by wearing anything that expresses our pride in being a South African; including colours of the national flag, traditional attire, soccer or rugby team jerseys and anything that reflects unity towards the 20th anniversary of freedom and democracy celebrations.

In celebrating this important landmark in our country’s history, government encourages every South African to participate in activities organised by their sector, organisation or business. All of us have the responsibility to respect and acknowledge the past, celebrate the present and build the future.

This is an opportunity for us to reflect on how we have achieved our freedom and democracy; the progress we have made in the past 20 years; what remains to be done and how as South Africans we are going to implement Vision 2030.

Addressing the media during the launch of the build-up programme towards the 20th anniversary of freedom and democracy, Minister Mashatile said that the launch was the beginning of a participatory process that will be underpinned by a number of activities to serve as a build up towards the celebrations.

These activities will culminate in the Freedom Day celebration on 27 April 2014 where collectively as South Africans we will say; “we have come a long way”.

“We remain grateful to the African Countries and international community for their support in the struggle for liberation”, said Mashatile.  “We will use the 20th anniversary to cement our relations with historical allies, economic and trade partners”, said Mashatile.
