Minister Mashatile to deliver the budget vote speech

The Arts and Culture Minister, Paul Mashatile will on Thursday, 16 May 2013 announce his budget plan as part of annual planning process. Together with his Deputy Minister Dr Joe Phaahla, the Minister will outline the budget plan and strategy for the financial year.

The department is expected to present the purpose of their budget vote in Parliament. The purpose of this annual process is to reflect on the work done, and the achievement of the previous term as well as to articulate plan for 2013/14.

Since the Minister declared 2013 as “the year of Mzansi Golden Economy”, the main focus will be on job creation and skills development through Mzansi Golden Economy projects. The budget vote will outline MGE plans on following initiatives: artists in schools; public art; national liberation heritage route; art bank; NACISA; cultural observatory and touring ventures. This will also look at the arts’ growth and contribution to the economy.

The budget vote will among other issues focus on social cohesion and nation building. DAC had invested in the new and refurbished memorials and museums which include the recently opened //hapo in Freedom Park. This will also highlight the progress made by the institutions; the implementation of the Community Library Grant and celebrating history of heritage struggles.
