Minister Maropene Ramokgopa leads build-up activities of 7th Presidential Imbizo at Uthukela District Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal, 29 Jun

Minister in the Presidency responsible for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Ms. Maropene Ramokgopa will on Thursday, 29 June 2023 lead build-up activities ahead of the 7th Presidential on Friday, 30 June 2023 at uThukela District Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal province. The uThukela District Municipality is a Category C municipality and consists of three local municipalities: Okhahlamba, Alfred Duma and Nkosi Langalibalele.

The build-up activities will include visits to the Ladysmith Provincial Hospital (Ladysmith Crisis Centre) which will focus on the functionality and resourcing of interventions targeted at victims of Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), and the Ezakheni Industrial Estate which will focus on efforts led by key businesses in the estate to promote economic recovery and job creation.

The purpose of the visits is to assess progress made in the challenges identified by the Frontline Service Delivery Monitoring (FSDM) unit within the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (DPME). 

It provides an opportunity to assess the extent to which policy and legislative systems are put into action to promote localization and improve service delivery. In addition, the visits aim to create a platform to promote social compacts between government and different sectors of society, including businesses and civil society organizations, to respond to the challenges within the district. 

The primary objectives of the build-up activities are in line with the tenets of the Presidential Imbizo on the District Development Model (DDM) which aims to champion a citizen-centric government through a government that engages regularly with its people; promotes a participatory governance system; stimulate accountability; enhance active and responsible citizenry; and mobilise for social consensus on creating jobs, accelerating integrated service delivery and grow an inclusive economy (ERP)

The Minister’s visit to the Crisis Centre will involve a briefing with management of the centre and a walk about to have a look at the resourcing and services that are provided by the centre.

The Minister’s visit to Ezakheni Industrial Estate will include a briefing session with management of the estate on issues of economic development and job creation, and a drive-by to two tenants within the estate: Defy Appliances and Trade Call Apparel (CMT).
