Minister in The Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities will host a stakeholder consultation to kick-start a year-long programme to tackle gender inequality and commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action
The year 2020 marks the 25th anniversary of the 4th World Conference for Women and the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The 64th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW64) scheduled to take place from the 9th to 20th March 2020 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, will be focusing on reviewing the progress made globally in implementing the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA). In light of the 25th anniversary, the UN has called on member states to celebrate it through a yearlong process of various activities.
In response to this call, the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD) will lead the 25th Year commemoration of the Beijing Platform for Action in South Africa.
Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane will host a two-day roundtable to kickstart a year-long programme of activities focusing in tackling inequality in the country.
The workshop will assess the current challenges affecting the implementation of the Platform for Action and the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women by reflecting on the country report, identifying policy gaps, recommending of policy priorities and to initiate a national plan with approaches that ensures that policies are implemented in the most effective, innovative and creative ways.
The workshop will bring together national and provincial departments, civil society organisations and key partners who are expected to hold a series of dialogues, roundtables and consultation workshops throughout the year at national and provincial levels to take stock of the progress made in addressing, protecting and promoting the rights of all women and girls in the country. These engagements will also allow for new mandates and policy priorities for the next five years, to be considered.
