Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane hosts consultative meeting in preparation for 64th Session of the United Nations Commissions on the Status of Women, 29 Feb to 2 Mar

Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane to host a three day consultative meeting in preparation for the upcoming 64th Session of the United Nations Commissions on the Status of Women (UNCSW64)

The Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane will host a three day consultation meeting with relevant stakeholders to prepare for South Africa`s participation in the upcoming 64th Session of the United Nations Commissions on the Status of Women (UNCSW64) scheduled to take place from 9 to 20 March 2020 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. UNCSW64 will focus on reviewing the progress made globally in implementing the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA), adopted by South Africa 25 years ago.

South Africa’s Beijing + 25 Report (released recently) measures the country’s progress in actions taken to pave the way for the advancement of women’s rights and achieving gender equality.

The objective of the three day consultative meeting is to consolidate South Africa`s position to the UNCSW64 session, pertaining to the draft Political Declaration that will be eventually adopted as the outcome document of UNCSW64. The meeting is also intended to ensure that the voices and experiences of women on the ground are captured in South Africa`s Country Statement and in the interventions for the High Level Panels, Roundtables and Interactive Dialogues on the various themes during the 64th Session.

This meeting will serve to capture and carry the voices of ordinary women to UNCSW64 to ensure that policy priorities are responsive to the needs of people on the ground. As South Africa assumes the AU Chairship President Ramaphosa has pronounced that women empowerment will be a priority focus during his tenure.

Amongst others, the event is expected to be attended by the Minister of Basic Education Ms Angie Motshekga, Minister of Small Business Development Ms Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, Minister of Social Development Ms Lindiwe Zulu, and Deputy Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries Ms Maggie Sotyu, as well as Business and Social Partners, The Interim Steering Committee on GBV, Commission on Gender Equality, etc.
