The Provincial Minister for Human Settlements in the Western Cape, Bonginkosi Madikizela, will donate clothes he personally collected for the fire victims of Du Noon, Cape Town. Minister Madikizela is also calling for civil society to donate clothes to fire victims, as many have lost everything in recent fires in the BM Section, Khayelitsha and Du Noon fires.
The Du Noon fire began 01:12 on Tuesday, 01 January 2013 at the Ethembeni Informal Settlement, gutting 15 formal houses, destroying another 249 shacks and displacing approximately 800 people. The blaze also damaged the overhead electricity supply, which is currently being repaired.
The City of Cape Town’s disaster response teams assisted the fire victims with the supply of 750 hot meals, 50 baby packs, and have so far delivered over 200 starter shack kits to help people rebuild.
Minister Madikizela will hand over the clothing to the local ward councillor, who will sort and distribute it fairly. He will also do a site visit.
