Minister Lindiwe Zulu addresses women in the taxi industry, launches a centre and speaks to the church as a build up to Women’s Day, 8 Aug

As a build up to National Women’s Day celebrations, the Minister of Social Development, Ms Lindiwe Zulu, will on 8 August 2019 embark on a number of initiatives.

The Minister’s first engagement will be with women in the taxi industry. According to the National Household Travel Survey Report from Statics South Africa (StatsSA), the public transport industry is accountable for 75% of the South African population’s transportation, with over 40% using the system for work-related purposes.

Through her engagement at the SA Taxi Women’s Day event, held under the theme: “Saluting Your Contribution to Society”, Minister Lindiwe Zulu aims to reaffirm the Department of Social Development’s acknowledgement and celebration of women in the taxi sector and their contribution to society.

In her address at the official launch of the Faith Mangope Technology and Leadership Institute, the Minister of Social Development will join fellow dignitaries in celebrating the role women play in instilling the prescribes of the 4th Industrial Revolution within the work environment.

The objectives of the Faith Mangope Technology and Leadership Institute are to educate, empower and equip young African women of the catalyst roles they play in ensuring that their importance as global ambassadors of new technology for self-sustainability is recognised.

The Minister’s final address at St Luke’s Catholic Church forms part of the Department’s longstanding partnership with faith-based organisations in order to upsurge the demise of societal ills such as HIV/Aids infections, child abuse, unemployment and gender-based violence.

These events take place on the eve of National Women’s Day which is celebrated under the theme: “25 Years of Democracy: Growing South Africa Together for Women’s Emancipation”.
