Minister Sisulu to launch the Albany Coast Sea Water Reverse Osmosis Plant

The Minister of Human Settlement, Water and Sanitation, Ms. Lindiwe Sisulu will, on Thursday 19 December 2019 at 10h00, launch the Albany Coast Sea Water Reverse Osmosis Plant upgrade.

The upgrade cost Amatola Water (AW) R18 million to ensure an increase in the water supply to Ward 3 and Ward 4 in the Ndlambe Local Municipality. The plant currently serves a population of about 11 683, within 4 046 households.

The plant is currently having a treatment capacity of about 1800m³/day. This water is then blended with Brackish Water from the Diaz Cross Sand Dunes, which yields about 700m³/day. Amatola Water upgraded the plant to provide additional 1 400m³ per day of potable water.

The current upgrades of the Works include the following:

  • Increase in the Raw Water Abstraction - 5 units with a combined raw water yield between 900m³/day and 1200m³/day, is anticipated to be delivered.
  • Increase in the Raw Water Abstraction: Increase in pumping capacity at Sea well 5, by upgrading the existing 7KW pump to 13 KW. This will increase the raw water yields from 4 061 m³/day to 5 357 m³/day.
  • Increase on the Raw Water Storage: Installation of 1Mega Litre Raw Water Reservoir, to ensure that there is sufficient water, to enable continuous production.
  • Increase in Treatment Capacity: Installation of a package plant with a treatment capacity of 1 400 m³/day.
