The Minister to launch the reopening of land claims in Eastern Cape

Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform Mr Gugile Nkwinti will on 14 August 2014 launch the re-opening of land claims at the lodgement of land claims office in East London followed by the official program taking place at the Regent Hotel.

Members of the Vulamasango Singenge group who were instrumental in lobbying for the re-opening will lodge their land claim on the day. President Jacob Zuma signed into law the Restitution of Land Rights Amendment Act, 2014 (Act 15 of 2014), which signaled the reopening of the lodgement of land claims for individuals, families and communities who missed the initial 31 December 1998 deadline.

The re-opening of the window for land claims for those who were dispossessed of their land by the 1913 Natives Land Act and subsequent legislation got underway on 1 July 2014. The re-opening is for a period of five years ending June 2019.

The proceedings of the day will include two parts:
