Minister Joe Phaahla leads World Cancer Day Commemorative event, 6 Feb

The Department of Health in collaboration with PinkDrive organisation, will tomorrow (Tuesday, 06 February) commemorate World Cancer Day to raise awareness of cancer and encourage people to go for regular cancer screening for early detection and successful treatment.

According to the World Health Organization, cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020, or nearly one in six deaths.

 In South Africa, cervical and breast cancer are the most prevalent amongst women, while lung and colorectal cancer are prevalent amongst men.

The event will be commemorated under the theme: “Together, we challenge those in power”, which serves as a clarion call for global leaders to prioritize and invest in cancer prevention and care and to do more to achieve a just and cancer-free world. 

Minister of Health Dr Joe Phaahla will deliver keynote address, and he will be joined by Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Ms Noelene Kotschan. CEO & Founder of PinkDrive, and the representatives from Japan and Austrian Embassies.
