Minister Grant to join learners for breakfast as part of the new breakfast meal in our feeding scheme

On Monday morning, Minister Donald Grant will be visiting Academia Primary School in Eerste River to join learners for their breakfast meal which is now part of the Western Cape school feeding scheme.

In his recent budget speech the Minister announced that this year, following a pilot last year, all feeding scheme schools will begin serving breakfasts as well as the lunches they already receive in this financial year.

Photo-op - The Minister will be assisting the feeding scheme staff in serving the breakfast and will then join the learners for breakfast.

Over 430 000 learners currently receive a nutritious lunch meal in the Western Cape every day. This programme has expanded year on year, with allocations to the feeding scheme having over doubled since 2009/10, increasing progressively from R112 million to R260 million in 2013/14. Learners will now also receive the breakfast meal.

This will not only provide more nutrition for our learners but will encourage our learners to arrive early for school, thus potentially decreasing late coming.

Details on the Western Cape feeding scheme will be provided to the media.
