Minister gets his hands dirty for Mandela Day

In celebration of Nelson Mandela Day, the Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom, has a number of activities lined up, starting with a donation of wheelchairs, blankets and walking sticks to elderly members of the Enon-Beersheba community in the Sundays River Valley, part of his constituency.

The donation will be made at a community meeting tomorrow, 16 July, from 19h00, at the Zinakile Mkhaba Community Hall. The next day Minister Hanekom will visit the Bavumeleni Educare Centre, with Sundays River Mayor, Mbulelo Kebe, and representatives of the Sundays River Citrus Company. The delegation will paint the centre, as well as giving the children blankets, mattresses, food parcels and puzzles.

At midday the Minister will visit the Isipho Multipurpose Centre to assist in clearing an area for the extension of the centre's vegetable garden and in installing the new fencing. A donation of cement, compost and food parcels will be made. To round off the day, the Minister will pay a visit to grandma Thembeka Yozo, who at 93 is the oldest lady in Paterson.
