The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, will host a celebration of the Afrikaans language in partnership with the War Museum of the Boer Republics on Saturday, 9 May 2026, at the War Museum in Bloemfontein.
The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), together with the War Museum of the Boer Republics, an entity of the Department and the Free State Provincial Government, will present a programme that celebrates the richness and diversity of Afrikaans language and culture.
Following the centenary of Afrikaans as an official language in 2025, this celebration builds on that milestone by underscoring the importance of preserving cultural heritage and promoting linguistic diversity in South Africa.
As one of the country’s official languages, Afrikaans holds a significant place in the nation’s historical and cultural landscape. The celebration, featuring Afrikaans music, literature, comedy, theatre, and cuisine, provides an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of the language while advancing efforts to preserve, develop, and promote Afrikaans, in line with the Department’s mandate to safeguard and celebrate South Africa’s rich and diverse heritage.
