Minister Fikile Mbalula joins Tshwane transport accessibility initiative, 25 Oct

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula will tomorrow, 25 October 2019, join Tshwane Member of the Mayoral Committee for Roads and Transport Sheila Lynn Senkubuge, Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Jacob Mamabolo and officials from Blind SA, to demonstrate mechanisms that promote the availability and integratedness of public transport for persons with disabilities

The itinerary for the in-loco tour is as follows:

  • 8h30:  A delegation of visually impaired people, will board Gautrain from Centurion to Hatfield station.
  • 9h30:  In the presence of the executive, there will be a display of how persons with disabilities move from the station point to the A Re Yeng bus terminal (along the way, using traffic lights with special features to assist blind pedestrians for safe crossing).
  • 10h00: Inside A Re Yeng bus, elements that are in place to assist people with disabilities will be showcased.
     

The bus will head to the Zoological Gardens of South Africa, known as Pretoria Zoo, where the delegation will get into taxis (including a universally accessible taxi).

  • 10h30: From Pretoria Zoo, the delegation will be transported to the heart of Pretoria CBD where they will disembark on Lillian Ngoyi Street (in front of the building housing Pretoria News offices) for the White Cane Walk which will include persons with visual impairment. In the CBD, there will be showcasing of tactile paving, which assists pedestrians who are visually impaired when walking around town.

The activities will culminate in a short meeting at Tshwane House, 320 Madiba Street in Pretoria, for a reflection on the tour and for media engagement.
