Minister Edna Molewa launches 2050 Pathways Calculator for South Africa, 26 Mar

The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs Mrs Edna Molewa to launch the 2050 Pathways Calculator for South Africa and 'GHG Emissions associated with Shale Gas' Research Report

The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa will on Wednesday, 26 March 2014 launch the 2050 Pathways Calculator for South Africa, at Gallagher Estate, Midrand. The launch will also see the release of the ‘Greenhouse Gas Emissions Associated with Shale Gas’ Research Report.

The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) has developed the 2050 Pathways Calculator for South Africa in collaboration with the United Kingdom’s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and the British High Commission.

The calculator is a simple and transparent tool for demonstrating different pathways of energy and emissions development over the coming decades. It is an online tool that allows people to explore the combinations of effort to reduce emissions while matching energy supply and demand.

The tool covers all sectors of the economy, and includes four trajectories for each of these, ranging from little or no effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or save energy (level 1) to extremely ambitious changes that push towards the physical or technical limits of what can be achieved (level 4).

The launch will also see a presentation of a research report entitled Greenhouse Gas Emissions Associated with Shale Gas. This research report has been commissioned in response to growing global and national interest in shale gas production as new reserves are discovered and exploration activities increase, as well as the environmental debates that this has created.

The main objective behind the research report is to inform and enrich the shale gas debate with a view to encouraging further research into the potential greenhouse gas emissions intensity of shale gas, particularly locally.
