Minister Edna Molewa to launch Greater Mthonjaneni Bulk Water Project in KwaZulu-Natal

The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa accompanied by the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Zweli Mkhize, provincial MEC’s, relevant high profile politicians and others will, on 24 August 2013 launch the Greater Mthonjaneni Bulk Water Project in Mthonjaneni Local Municipality, uThungulu District Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal.

  • This bulk pipeline project is aimed at eradicating water backlogs of 30% of the uThungulu District Municipality communities. When the entire scheme is completed, the project will provide water services to over 281 864 people within the service area.
  • It will also ensure the delivery of sustainable basic water services and the enhancement of economic development towards achieving the national services target by 2014.
  • Close to 700 households are the beneficiaries of Phase 1 of the project with the estimated 4478 households to benefit from the scheme when both phases 1 and 2 are completed.
  • 846 jobs have been created during phase 1 of the project.

The minister will officially launch the project by cutting the ribbon at the pump station and opening a tap at one of the households. This will then be followed by the main event where the communities will be addressed about the project.
