Minister Peters holds a road safety revival in Tembisa aimed at mobilising million signature and also to open Eco mobility World festival in Sandton
The Minister of Transport, Ms. Dipuo Peters will lead a road safety revival prayer on Sunday, October 2015 in Tembisa.
To be held under the theme: “We deserve safer roads”, the road safety revival comes in support of the Minister’s conviction to encourage road user’s behavioural change through moral revival.
It is also aimed at mobilising support for the million signature campaign towards active participation of civic society as government’s partner in changing the behaviour of road users.
The revival is also the Minister’s plea to the interfaith and civic society leaders to join hands and play a role of active strategic partners that will help to put to an end to road carnage, driver delinquency and enhance road user’s respect for human life through prayer, awareness and educational initiatives.
It is expected that 3500 people of diverse faiths will grace the revival.
The Minister will be joined by the Deputy Minister of Transport Ms Sindisiwe Chikunga, Mayor of Ekurhuleni Mr Mondli Gungubele , the Registrar of Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) Mr Japh Chuwe and leaders of various faiths.
By the invitation of the City of Johannesburg, Minister Peters will in the morning officially open the EcoMobility World Festival 2015 hosted by the City of Johannesburg in the Sandton CBD.
The festival will begin with the opening of streets between Sandton CBD and Alexandra to all forms of Ecomobility.
EcoMobility World Festival is an annual environmental event aimed at reducing traffic congestion in major cities by encouraging people to park their private cars and use public transport and bicycles.
The Minister will use public transport to travel to Sandton on the day.
Over 100 000 people travel to and from Sandton every day, with more than 75 000 vehicles driving into the city in the mornings, making it one of the congested growing city centres in the world. The city is facing the risk of losing its attractiveness as a business destination if these numbers are not reduced.
Sandton is the second global city to celebrate the carnival after the South Korean city of Suwon which hosted the event in 2014.
The Minister will be joined by the Premier of Gauteng Mr. David Makhura, City of Johannesburg Mayor Mr Parks Tau, MEC for Roads and Transport Mr Ismail Vadi, the Mayor of South Korean city of Suwon , Mayors from other world cities and as well as senior government officials and academics from various universities both locally and international.
