Cradock 4 Garden of Remembrance receives a tourism infrastructure boost– Eastern Cape
The month of June 2018 will mark 33 years of the death of the Cradock Four anti-apartheid activists. To commemorate their contribution to the establishment of a democratic South Africa, Minister Derek Hanekom will hand-over facilities at the Cradock 4 Garden of Remembrance to the Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape.
The Department of Tourism constructed and repaired various aspects of the memorial as part of the greater objective of the National Tourism Sector Strategy (NTSS 2016-2026) to improve visitor experience through the development of tourism infrastructure at rural nodes, and to ensure that South Africans enjoy the broad-based benefits of tourism.
The Cradock 4 Garden of Remembrance was built in memory of the four anti-apartheid activists Matthew Goniwe, Sicelo Mhlawuli, Sparrow Mkhonto, and Fort Calata. It is envisioned that the infrastructure improvements will enable the community to host more educational and cultural activities that will facilitate information sharing, and the celebration of the legacy of the four activists and those that fought against oppression.
The event will conclude with an Imbizo, affording the Minister and the Executive from the Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipality an opportunity to engage with the community on the tourism opportunities.
