BRICS science, technology and innovation ministers to meet in Gqeberha

The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, will host the science, technology and innovation (STI) ministers from Brazil, Russia, India and China on 3 and 4 August 2023 in the Eastern Cape.

South Africa assumed the BRICS rotating presidency on 1 January this year, under the theme "BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development and Inclusive Multilateralism".  The 11th BRICS STI Ministerial Meeting is one of the activities leading up to the 15th BRICS Summit in August 2023.

From 31 July to 2 August, young scientists and researchers from BRICS countries attended the BRICS Young Scientist Forum in Gqeberha, to showcase their work and make connections to tackle pressing global issues like climate change. On 3 August, there will be a BRICS STI Senior Officials Meeting.

On the evening of 3 August, Minister Nzimande will award the Young Innovators Prize at a gala dinner.  Organised by the Technology Innovation Agency, a Department of Science and Innovation Agency, the Young Innovators Prize rewards BRICS young scientists for innovations created to benefit society.
