Ministry of Police and SAPS management to lead cross-border operations in Northern KwaZulu-Natal
The Ministry of Police and SAPS management will today visit the Umkhanyakude district municipality in Northern KwaZulu-Natal to assess the SAPS border security festive season operations.
A SAPS task team to clamp down on cross-border crime has been deployed to the area since February 2023 following incidents of cross-border vehicle theft where stolen and hijacked vehicles were being smuggled into Mozambique from South Africa.
Thus far, more than 140 suspects linked to cross-border vehicle theft syndicates in the area have been arrested and more than 64 vehicles recovered in the area.
Firearms and rifles as well as ammunition used in the commission of some of these crimes in the area have also been recovered during operations.
This visit will be led by the Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele, the Deputy Minister of Police, Mr Cassel Mathale as well as the National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola.
