Minister Bathabile Dlamini launches social budget bulletin with University of Witwatersrand, 27 Sept

Minister Dlamini to launch social budget bulletin with the University of Witwatersrand

The Minister of Social Development, Ms Bathabile Dlamini, will in collaboration with the University of the Witwatersrand, launch the Social Budget Bulletin on Wednesday, September 27.  The Social budget bulletin is a research tool that will assist Government and policy makers with a comprehensive view of all social security spending, both public and private, contributory and non-contributory; which is necessary for developing evidence based social policy.

This research work is informed by a need for Government to align social security spending in a more equitable manner and to ensure greater coherence in the country’s social security system. The University of the Witwatersrand is a key partner in this work, and has over the last few years made significant strides, through its School of Governance, in developing capacity within the country around issues of social budgeting and broader social security training. This initiative is taking place during a period declared by Government as the year of President Oliver Reginald Tambo, who valued the importance of education as a means to defeat inequalities. Government is currently engaging with social partners at NEDLAC on developing a Comprehensive Social Security System for South Africa.

Minister Dlamini will also use this opportunity to launch the Social Development Month campaign which seeks to improve the living conditions of poor South Africans who live in rural and underdeveloped communities.
