Minister of Basic Education and CEO of Tiger Brands serve the 10 millionth breakfast

The Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga, accompanied by Chairperson of The Tiger Brands Foundation Dr Miriam Altman and the CEO of Tiger Brands Peter Matlare will celebrate the serving of the 10 millionth breakfast meal at the Gquebenya Junior Secondary School in the Lady Frere district, Eastern Cape on Tuesday, 16 April 2013.

Tiger Brands Foundation (TBF) in partnership with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) will celebrate this 10 millionth milestone as part of the DBE’s National Schools Nutrition Programme (NSNP), which provides nutritional meals to over eight million learners daily. This partnership has created the introduction of in-school breakfast feeding to complement the NSNP lunch, which is prepared and served to learners in non-fee paying schools.

As the first public private partnership, the DBE and Tiger Brands Foundation have developed a model to offer in-school breakfast feeding, provide training and development of the NSNP food handlers in key areas such as food storage and preparation, cooking and personal hygiene. The collaboration allows for regular evaluation and sharing of information to maintain a consistent standard for in-school feeding.

The NSNP safeguards the health of South Africa’s poorest learners and makes an important contribution to their education. This intervention is closely aligned with the goals of Action Plan 2014 to promote the well-being of learners.
