Minister Barbara Creecy opens seven refurbished stations on the East London rail corridor, 27 Oct

The Minister of Transport, Hon. Barbara Creecy, will officially open seven refurbished railway stations along the East London rail corridor on Tuesday, 27 October 2026.

The stations at Mtsotso, Fort Jackson, Panmure, Mdantsane, Arnoldton, Mount Ruth and Wilsonia had been damaged and vandalised. The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has since rehabilitated each one. The work has renewed commuter facilities, improved safety and widened access for the communities these stations serve.

The project has also created direct employment for residents of surrounding communities and opportunities for local SMMEs. The opening forms part of October Transport Month, held this year under the theme “Building a safe, sustainable, reliable and affordable transport system”. It reflects PRASA’s wider programme to rebuild passenger rail across the country: restoring infrastructure, rebuilding stations, strengthening safety and improving the reliability of commuter services.

On the day, the Minister will travel by train from Fort Jackson Station to the Station Building on Station Street, KuGompo. The journey will offer a first-hand view of the improved service and the work completed at the stations.
