Minister Motshekga to launch Rural Education Assistant Project (REAP)
The Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga will on Thursday 27 September 2018 launch the Rural Education Assistant Project or REAP at the Carter High School in Pietermaritzburg, Kwa-Zulu Natal.
The REAP project is aimed at pilot testing, researching and evaluating the impact of the use of Education Assistants in the Foundation and Intermediate Phases for improving the quality of education in rural schools. The project has four components:
- mobilising the youth in rural communities to participate in education initiatives;
- improving the quality of teaching and learning;
- supporting school-based agricultural projects; and
- conducting research and evaluation of the REAP.
The pilot project will be implemented over three years from 2018 - 2021 and will see six rural districts benefiting from this project, namely: Alfred Nzo East and OR Tambo Coastal District in the Eastern Cape Province; ILembe and UMzinyathi District in KwaZulu-Natal Province; and Sekhukhune and Mopani Districts in Limpopo Province.
A total of 188 schools will participate in this project which is divided amongst the 3 provinces. Each school will be allocated at least four Education Assistants, bringing the total number of Education Assistants deployed to all schools to 750.
