Minister Angie Motshekga launches 2023 Schools Democracy Education Programme and commemoration of Freedom Month, 13 Apr

Minister of Basic Education Mrs Angie Motshekga, MP, will tomorrow, Thursday 13 April 2023 launch the 2023 Schools Democracy Education Programme and the commemoration of Freedom Month. The launch will take place at Platinum Village Secondary School in Rustenburg, North West.

As Freedom Day is celebrated on 27 April annually, the DBE hosts commemorative engagements between 1 and 30 April, to mark Freedom Month. The commemorations offer us an opportunity to reflect on progress made in transforming our society, while also examining our challenges.

During Freedom Month, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), together with the DBE and Provincial Education Departments (PEDs), collaborate in promoting electoral democracy literacy to young South Africans in public schools nationwide, to dub this month as Schools Democracy Month. The DBE takes this opportunity to reflect on particular youth freedom attained through the Global Fund Adolescents and Youth Programme and give impetus to learners’ Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

The Minister will be joined at the launch by the North West MEC of Education Ms Viola Motsumi, Bojanala District Executive Mayor Cllr M. Nondzaba, the Deputy CEO of IEC Mr. Mawethu Mosery and other officials from government, IEC and NGOs.

Members of the media are invited to attend the launch with Minister as follows:
