Minister of Basic Education Mrs Angie Motshekga and the Western Cape Education MEC, Mrs Debbie Schäfer, will tomorrow Tuesday 29 September 2015 continue to deliver sustainable change to rural education with the official handover of Swartberg Secondary School in Caledon in the Western Cape.

As one of the schools built under the Accelerated Schools Infrastructure Delivery Initiative (ASIDI) programme of the Department of Basic Education, Swartberg Secondary School stands as testament to the ambitions of ASIDI in restoring dignity to rural education.

Built at a cost in excess of R 41 Million, Swartberg Secondary School forms part of the R8.2-billion ASIDI programme which ensures that every school built has the necessary provision of the basic services which includes water, sanitation and electricity to those schools that never had any before.

The department has committed to eradicate mud schools through the ASIDI. The ASIDI programme, together with the provincial infrastructure programmes, form the backbone of SIP13 and the national school build programme of the Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Commission. There are 109 schools that have been completed, 342 schools have received water for the first time, and 351 schools have received decent sanitation and 288 schools have been connected to electricity for the first time. As a result of improved infrastructure, a higher proportion of younger children are accessing classroom facilities.
