The Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshekga together with Western Cape Education MEC, Debbie Schafer will tomorrow, Tuesday 8 September 2015 celebrate International Literacy Day at Masivuke Primary School in Phillipi, Cape Town, Western Cape.
This year the world will celebrates Literacy Day under the theme ‘Literacy and Sustainable Societies”. This underscores the power of literacy to enable people to make choices that promote economic growth, social development and environmental integration. Literacy is the basis for lifelong learning and plays a crucial role in the creation of sustainable, prosperous and peaceful societies.
September 8 was proclaimed International Literacy Day by the (United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), with the aim of highlighting the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.
As a main focal point of the department, literacy, reading and the promotion of library services have culminated in the departments ‘’Drop All and Read’’ campaign which seeks to ensure a culture of reading is instilled in learners, parents and communities alike.
