Minds in the arts sector meet to explore challenges facing the sector

The Department of Arts and Culture will host an induction meeting for the appointed Task Team on Local Content and Music. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, 10 July 2013 at Emoyeni Conference Centre in Parktown, Johannesburg.

The Task Team was appointed by Minister Mashatile after consulting with the sector through various platforms and from that received numerous grievances and challenges facing the development of the sector.

Minister Mashatile indicated in 2013/14 budget speech that the music industry is one of the biggest in the sector and it continues to be plagued by challenges including piracy, royalties collection and social security. Whilst the Music Task Team is expected to amongst others to propose workable strategies to address the challenges indicated. The Local Content Task team will look at redressing and developing a transformation charter on local content, airplay, distribution and other challenges.

The task team will be expected to sit for the duration of three months from July 2013 and submit a preliminary report by end of September. They will be guided by the work that government has already done on the sector for example the 2001 Music Industry Task Team report, 2012 Copyright Review Commission report, 2011 Mzansi Golden Economy Strategy, 1998 Cultural Industries Growth Strategy, Copyright Act, 1978 as amended, 1998 Film Development Strategy and 2003 Local Content Strategy.
