African Traditional Medicine is the basis of primary health care for the majority of people leaving in the rural areas (about 80% of the population). In most of the developing world, traditional medicines continue to play a significant role in the treatment and management of some of the devastating and life-threatening diseases.

Hence the Interim Traditional Health Practitioners Council is established in terms of the Traditional Health Practitioners Act, 2007 (Act no. 22 of 2007) which provides for:

  • A regulatory framework to ensure efficacy, safety and quality of Traditional Health services,
  • Treatment and preventative measures in Traditional medicine, and
  • Objectives, Quality, universal Norms and Standards on Traditional Medicine.
