MECs Helen Sauls-August and Nancy Sihlwayi hand over homes to destitute beneficiaries in Eastern Cape, 15 Jun

A 21 year-old blind girl from Saphukanduku village in Ntabankulu, Mount Frere will get a new fully furnished house from government as part of  the June 16 Youth Month commemoration by the Eastern Cape Government.

Yandiswa Mafu and her family of five will move into their new home on the eve of the 1976 uprisings commemoration on June 16. Yandiswa is blind. She and her family are currently living in a collapsing mud hut.

The second family that will also receive a fully furnished home, is that of Mpongwana Khuzwayo, who is bedridden, needing special care and decent shelter that will accommodate her special needs.

The houses are built with 45 square metre size top structures with vinyl tiles on the floor, electricity tubing, ceiling, and partial services that are water tanks and VIP toilets.

The department plans to build 2 050 housing units for qualifying beneficiaries during this financial year in the Alfred Nzo District alone. An amount of R181 604 005 m has been set aside for the construction of these houses. Alfred Nzo is a rural district with an estimated population of over 832 121 and unemployment rate of 44%. The area has 2 010 informal dwellings, 93 619 traditional dwellings.

The Department of Social Development and Special Programmes will hand over food parcels to these families and to 10 more needy families in the village.

The MEC of Human Settlements, Helen Sauls-August, and MEC of Social Development and Special Programmes, Nancy Sihlwayi, will hand over fully furnished homes to destitute beneficiaries in Ntabankulu, Alfred Nzo District Municipality on 15 June 2015
