MEC Wendy Nelson officially hands over houses to elderly women in Signal Hill, 30 Oct

The Acting MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements in Bokone Bophirima, Wendy Nelson, will on Friday, 30 October 2015, officially hand over four houses to elderly women (aged between 45 and 88 years) in Signal Hill near Mahikeng.

These houses were built through partnership with the South African Women in Construction (SAWIC) in the Province under the armbit of Women’s Build project. The Women’s Build project was first introduced in 2010 to facilitate implementation of the women in human settlements framework that looks at addressing the issues that affect women in human settlements sector by harnessing the resources and putting in place the systems and the processes that will facilitate the empowerment of women contractors.  

It is also aimed at commemorating the 1956 women’s march to the Union Buildings against unjust apartheid pass laws and it commands Provinces to:

  • Construct one thousand nine hundred and fifty six (1956) houses to commemorate the historic 1956 march by women to Union Buildings per annum.
  • Provinces to commit 30% of the human settlements budget for the allocation of projects to women.
