Eastern Cape MEC for Transport Thandiswa Marawu will address the recipients of both the Department and South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) bursary schemes for 2014 at Mthatha Airport on 21 January 2014 at 10h00.

The MEC’s briefing session is intended to bring together all the recipients before they embark on their studies in various universities as from next week in transport related fields including:

  • ND Transport Management
  • ND Civil Engineering (Transport Planning)
  • ND Maritime Studies
  • ND Information Technology

Both the MEC’s for Education and Transport will in the future arrange to visit the SAMSA bursary recipients at CPUT and Lawhill to view the facilities. The main focus of the Department’s bursary scheme is to develop the scarce skills in the transport sector, particularly in the Eastern Cape.

It is intended to build a new transport sector cadre and open the window to the future for the youth of this province. SAMSA has bursary recipients who are currently schooling at Lawhill in the Western Cape and thus far it has the following:

  • 22 bursary recipients for the years 2011 to 2014.
  • Total cost for the 22 is equal to R628 000 paid by SAMSA.
  • The 22 is inclusive of the 6 new learners who started at Lawhill in January 2014.
  • From 2011 to 2013 there have been 12 learners who matriculated and they are currently studying at the Cape University of Technology (CPUT) (Inclusive of the new 2014 intake of 6)
  • Total cost for the 12 CPUT students is R1, 5million, which is from SAMSA coffers.
