Gauteng city region embarks on campaign against illicit mining

The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, accompanied by the City of Johannesburg Members of the Mayoral Committee, local South African Police Service (SAPS), National Intelligence Co-ordinating Committee and officials from the National Department of Minerals Resources will embark on a campaign to address illicit mining in Roodepoort and surrounding areas.

Activities for the day include visits to hotspots such as Matholeville milling sites, Sol Plaatje open holes, Main Reef Road shaft entrance and Durban Deep shaft entrance. The day’s activities will end with a public meeting at Matholeville Community Hall at 17:00pm.

The aim of the campaign is to create awareness on the dangers of illegal mining and to mobilize communities around abandoned mining sites to partner with government in the fight against these illicit activities.

Over the years illegal mining has created negative financial impact on the country due to loss of revenue and has led to a number of criminal activities including trespassing, theft and death in some cases.
