Since assuming public responsibility by this administration in 2009, the levels of crime have been on the decline. However, it has been our collective view that one incident of crime is one too many. As per the 2009 election Manifesto, fighting Crime and Corruption is one of the 5 key priorities of Government. The commitment is to ensure that Free Staters and the rest of South Africans are and feel safe.
Despite the efforts we have made in lowering the levels of crime, we remain concerned with the isolated incidents of crime meted particularly against women, children and the elderly in our communities. We have witnessed incidents of gangsterism and the scourge of rape that is targeted at women, children and the elderly.
The Provincial Budget Implementation Lekgotla held on the 27 – 28 February 2013 took a stance to embark on an inclusive and integrated approach to eradicate crime and criminality in all aspects of social and public life.
Towards this end, the Free State will host a Provincial Crime Prevention Summit on the 11 to 12 April 2013 to develop an integrated strategy that will be the Hall mark of Crime Prevention in the Province in line with Free State vision 2030 and the National Development Plan 2030.
All Free Staters are called upon to work together to ensure that the Free State becomes safe and secure for its entire people including women and children.
