MEC to boost young farmer with a tractor
Eastern Cape MEC for Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR) Nonkqubela Pieters will boost the production of a young vegetable farmer with a tractor and its implements during an official handover to be held in Keiskammahek on Thursday.
The 29-year-old farmer, Sihle Maseko is one of the farmers in the province who used his education and knowledge gained from family to start-up a vegetable production enterprise.
He holds a diploma in Agricultural management and has been a job seeker for some years, including driving taxis before he ultimately resorted to be a full time farmer.
Maseko started with only a hectare but now he is producing on 15ha where 5ha is owned by the family and 10 ha is a 10-year lease from the community.
He produces a variety vegetables ranging from cabbages, butternut and green mealies where he employed 10 people.
His market extends to other Districts such as Chris Hani and OR Tambo and has regular buyers in Middledrift, Alice, Keiskammahoek, East London, Peddie and in other areas in the Amathole District. There is a newly built market facility by DRDAR in Keiskammahek which will assist his marketing.
Members of the media are invited to witness this event where the MEC will handover tools that will enhance Maseko’s enterprise and propel him to make more profit.
