MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko leads candlelight service for eight victims of femicide in Sicelo, 7 Dec

In memory of eight (8) women who lost their lives due to femicide in Sicelo, the Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo- Ralehoko together with families of the victims will tomorrow, Thursday, 07 December 2023 hold a candlelight memorial service.

These femicide incidents happened between 2017 and 2021, and the victims’ bodies were found dumped in open fields around Sicelo. In addition to this, almost 10% of all victims of all sexual offences seen at the Kopanong Hospital Thuthuzela Care Centre are from Midvaal with a significant proportion of these being from Sicelo.

MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko will take this opportunity to call for continued collaborative efforts to intensify the fight against gender-based violence and femicide as part of 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children to promote public knowledge of the services available to victims of these inhumane offences.

This year marks the 25-year anniversary since South Africa initiated the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign, and it is observed under the theme “Accelerating actions to end gender-based violence and femicide: leaving no one behind”.
