STI/Condom Week: Health MEC Dr Magome Masike to raise awareness in Marikana
The North West Department of Health MEC, Dr Magome Masike will lead a team of Health Promoters and Community Health-care Workers to raise awareness about Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and the importance of using condoms in Marikana West (next to Marikana Combined School) on Saturday, 15 February. Proceedings are scheduled to start at 09h00.
The awareness is done in accordance with STI’s/ Condom Week: 10 to 16 February under the theme “Be wise. Get tested for TB & HIV. Condomise to prevent STIs and unplanned pregnancies”. The move is aimed at decreasing the number of new STI and HIV infections, advocate for delayed sexual debut and to help prevent unwanted pregnancy amongst the general population.
Health Promoters together with Community Health Workers embarked on a door to door campaign and health education in public areas like Taxi Ranks and malls from Monday across the province to increase awareness on prevention and management of STIs.
The week long campaign highlights awareness of the symptoms and signs of STIs; importance of promptly seeking treatment for STIs; awareness of the availability of free, quality male condoms from public clinics, hospitals and non-traditional outlets.
The awareness will also focus on the importance of early booking for antenatal care and discouraging home deliveries.
