MEC Lebogang Maile announces finalists for School Sport Awards, 18 Feb

Celebrating tomorrow’s champions: MEC Maile to announce finalists for revived School Sport Awards

Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC Lebogang Maile is expected to announce the finalists for the upcoming School Sport Awards at a media briefing on Tuesday, 18 February at Sports Council House, Johannesburg Stadium.

Preparations are now at the final stages as the countdown to the rejuvenated Gauteng School Sport Awards reaches its final week - the awards event is scheduled to be held next Friday (21 February 2014) at Birchwood Hotel in Ekurhuleni.

The Gauteng School Sport Awards were last held in 2002, where long jump and triple jump star Khotso Mokoena was one of the winners, having been honoured as Secondary Sports Boy of the Year. Mokoena went on to win a Silver Medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing among several other international achievements.

Maile said: “The development of future champions that will elevate the South African flag to glory at the highest level internationally depends on the foundation we lay today through our commitment to school sport. With these awards we aim to encourage and inspire the youth to continue working hard and excel in their respective codes, and to inspire more youth to participate in sport at our schools”

The MEC has pledged to raise the Gauteng School Sport Awards into one of the major events of the year, consistent with the annual celebration of the province’s sporting excellence in the form of the Gauteng Sport Awards.
