Gauteng Provincial Government Water and Sanitation Forum to hold special meeting
The prevailing dry and hot weather conditions which have resulted in drought, heat wave and no rain have put water resources and Gauteng municipalities under enormous pressure. In order to pull efforts together to save the available water and to coordinate a provincial response to the water challenges, Gauteng COGTA and Human Settlements MEC Jacob Mamabolo has called a special meeting of the Gauteng City Region Water and Sanitation Forum to sit on Monday.
This forum was officially launched in February this year by Premier David Makhura to address water supply challenges in the province following water challenges that hit Gauteng late last year.
“Whilst our municipalities have done an excellent job to communicate with communities and residents about the water challenges and efforts to control the use of water and providing relief through water tanks, it is important that we come together as municipalities and various stakeholders to concretize our response and get a holistic view of the provincial water situation. This meeting will also help to amplify government message to save water and to use it sparingly”, MEC Mamabolo said.
Key in the Monday meeting is to discuss the report by Rand Water on the water situation and after the deliberations MEC Mamabolo will brief the media on the outcomes of the discussions. Eskom will also brief the forum on how water shortages are affecting them and what are their contingency plans to respond to the situation.
The Water and Sanitation Forum, which is comprised of the Department of Water and Sanitation, Provincial Government, all Municipalities and other relevant stakeholders such as Rand Water and Eskom, is responsible for tackling water and sanitation challenges in the province and implementing strategies to deal with such challenges.
