Youth set to benefit from Contractor Development Programme
Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Dr Ismail Vadi will on Thursday, 27 February 2014, officially launch the Vuk’uphile Contractor Development Programme at the Finetown Community Hall, Lenasia.
The programme, which is a partnership between the Gauteng Provincial Department of Roads (GPDRT) and Transport and the National Department of Public Works (NDPW), will see SMMEs and BEE contractors benefitting from labour-intensive technologies through training and mentorship.
This is Phase 2 of the Expanded Public Works Programme where contractors and construction supervisors will be trained and mentored over a period of three years.
The Vuk’uphile contractors will be inducted through informal training (classroom training) provided by GPDRT whilst the formal training (on-site training) will be done through NDPW.
As part of the training process, the department will award projects to learner contractors where they will be assisted by mentors. This is aimed at ensuring that emerging contractors are empowered with the ability to execute and oversee labour intensive projects.
The programme is part of government’s commitment to creating employment opportunities by supporting and training SMME’s as well as developing skills through infrastructure projects.
