Eastern Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Helen Sauls-August is visiting a rectification project in Qumbu on 13 August 2015. The visit is part of the Eastern Cape Executive Council Outreach currently underway in the OR Tambo District from the 12-13th of August.
The housing project to be visited was shoddily built in 1999 and is currently under rectification. It has 399 units completed and 105 units at various stages of rectification. An amount of R 66 021 971.20 has been allocated for the rectification work in the area.
The department is this financial year (2015/2016) planning to rectify 2 311 defective houses built between 1994 and 2004. The cost of rectification includes installing of services such as water, sanitation, relocations, assessment of defective houses and building of top structures.
A total of 21 573 defective houses were rectified between 2009 and March 2014. These houses comprise of houses built pre and post 1994 with a bulk of houses built between1994 to 2002. Most of the rectification in the province is from the projects that were implemented by municipalities either as Peoples Housing Process or completed units poorly built due to:
- Poor workmanship by contractors
- Use of inferior construction materials
- Lack of adequate planning and technical inputs (mainly around foundation designs.
The main objective of the rectification programme is to facilitate the improvement of poor build housing stocks funded through the State before and after 1994.
