MEC for Human Settlements, Safety and Liaison Helen Sauls-August will be on a service delivery visit in Elliotdale where she will open and hand over social amenities to the community in two rural villages.
The amenities, a multi-purpose community centre, crèche and a sport field are part of the Elliotdale Breaking New Ground Policy that will see a massive 7 000 new homes built in Elliotdale. The Elliotdale project is part of a comprehensive informal settlements upgrading programme which has other six active Informal Settlement Upgrading projects totalling 69 200 number of units over the project completion period.
These are located in Zanemvula in Nelson Mandela Metro, Thorn Hill in Ndlambe, Siyanda in Mnquma and Ngangelizwe in King Sabatha Dalindyebo where government is relocating thousands of people from shacks into new settlements with social and economic amenities.
The social amenities to be handed over on Tuesday will play a critical role in a community which has in recent years been marred by incidents of witchcraft related murder that saw a grandmother and four of her grandchildren burnt to death in Ntsingizi village in 2010. The family whose house was burnt during the incident and left homeless, will now get to start a new life with a handover of a fully furnished home.
The MEC will also visit Ngangolwandle High school in the villages to motivate matric learners ahead of matric exams this year in an effort to improve matric results in the province.
